Transvaginal ultrasound workshopsUniversity Hospital of Wales , CardiffAbout the Workshops Transvaginal ultrasound plays an important role in the management of a wide range of obstetric and gynaecological conditions. It is not surprising that it has become a core skill of our specialty training syllabus and an irreplaceable diagnostic tool - it is truly an integral part of our clinical practice. The first hands-on Transvaginal Ultrasound Workshop organised by Mr Amso was held in 1992 at Newcastle General Hospital. Over the years the workshops moved to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead and from 1998 at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. Ever since, training in gynaecological imaging has become more thorough and structured and has become, alongside obstetric imaging, a core skill for our specialist trainees. With this is mind, the training programme has evolved in recent years to provide learning opportunities at different levels starting with the short hands-on workshops for beginners and those who wish to fine-tune their skills under experts' guidance to a higher level catering for those who wish to enrol on an accredited and robust scheme of study at Cardiff University leading to Certification, Diploma or Masters in obstetric and/or gynaecological ultrasound. In addition and recognising the importance of new technology, MedaPhor® Ltd, a partnership between Cardiff University, Industry and Computer experts and Educationists, was setup in 2004 to develop novel virtual reality/simulation programmes and elearning tutorials to support the learning process. |
